【Learn Chinese】Your First Chinese Coffee Order

Grabbing a coffee might seem simple, but doing it in Chinese? That’s your first real-life language challenge! Whether you’re navigating a Starbucks in Shanghai or a cozy café in Beijing, this guide will have you sounding like a local in no time.

Step 1: Getting Their Attention
In a busy Chinese café, you can't just shout "Excuse me!" Wait for eye contact or politely say:
服务员 (fú wù yuán) – Waiter/Waitress
你好 (nǐ hǎo) – Hello (works every time)

Step 2: The Key Vocabulary
Memorize these three words—they are your best friends:
拿铁 (ná tiě) – Latte
美式 (měi shì) – Americano
卡布奇诺 (kǎ bù qí nuò) – Cappuccino
摩卡 (mó kǎ) – Mocha
馥芮白 (fù ruì bái) – Flat White
热 (rè) – Hot
冰 (bīng) – Ice / Iced
大杯 (dà bēi) – Large cup
中杯 (zhōng bēi) – Medium cup
小杯 (xiǎo bēi) – Small cup

Step 3: The Ordering Script
Here is a simple formula: Hello + [Quantity] + [Size/Temp] + [Drink Name] + Please.
Try this dialogue:
You: 你好,我要一杯拿铁。(Nǐ hǎo, wǒ yào yì bēi ná tiě.) Hello, I would like one cup of latte.
Barista: 热的还是冰的?(Rè de hái shì bīng de?) Hot or iced?
You: 热的,大杯。谢谢!(Rè de, dà bēi. Xiè xie!) Hot, large cup. Thanks!

Step 4: Customizing Your Drink (The Fun Part)
Want to level up? Here is how to customize:
少糖 (shǎo táng) – Less sugar
无糖 (wú táng) – No sugar
牛奶 (niú nǎi) – Milk
燕麦奶 (yàn mài nǎi) – Oat milk

In China, saying “谢谢” (xiè xie – thank you) is extremely important. Always greet the barista with a smile and a "ni hao," and don't forget to say "xie xie" when you get your drink!
Chinese cafés are social hubs. Don't be surprised if your friends order for the whole table. Listening to how they order is great listening practice!

Ready to practice?
Imagine you want an iced Americano with no sugar. Can you build the sentence?
