【Learn Chinese】5 Measure Words That Trip Up Every Chinese Beginner

If you’re new to Chinese, you’ve probably stared at a sentence and wondered: why is it 一条鱼 and not 一个鱼? 量词 (liàngcí) — measure words — are one of the most confusing grammar features for English speakers, because English only uses “a/an” for most singular nouns.
Chinese has hundreds of them, but the most common ones follow simple, logical patterns. Master these five, and you’ll instantly sound more natural in daily speech.

1. 条 (tiáo)
Core logic: long, thin, flexible or narrow things.
Beginners often use 个 for everything, but 条 covers a huge range of common nouns. The most obvious are long thin objects: 一条河 (yī tiáo hé) — a river, 一条路 (yī tiáo lù) — a road, 一条绳子 (yī tiáo shéngzi) — a rope. But it also applies to things that come in long shapes: 一条鱼 (yī tiáo yú) — a fish, 一条狗 (yī tiáo gǒu) — a dog (long body shape), 一条裤子 (yī tiáo kùzi) — a pair of pants (long leg shape). Even abstract long things use it: 一条新闻 (yī tiáo xīnwén) — a piece of news.

2. 张 (zhāng)
Core logic: flat, sheet-like things that can be spread out.
This one surprise learners because it applies to more than just paper. You’ll use it for 一张纸 (yī zhāng zhǐ) — a sheet of paper, 一张照片 (yī zhāng zhàopiàn) — a photo, 一张票 (yī zhāng piào) — a ticket. But it also works for large flat furniture: 一张桌子 (yī zhāng zhuōzi) — a table, 一张床 (yī zhāng chuáng) — a bed. Even faces use it: 一张脸 (yī zhāng liǎn) — a face.

3. 份 (fèn)
Core logic: a portion or set intended for one person.
This is the measure word for meals, documents and sets of things. Use it for 一份饭 (yī fèn fàn) — a set meal, 一份报纸 (yī fèn bàozhǐ) — a newspaper, 一份工作 (yī fèn gōngzuò) — a job, 一份礼物 (yī fèn lǐwù) — a gift. If you are ordering takeout, this is the word you will use most.

4. 双 (shuāng)
Core logic: a pair of two matching items.
Anything that comes in twos uses 双. This includes 一双鞋 (yī shuāng xié) — a pair of shoes, 一双袜子 (yī shuāng wàzi) — a pair of socks, 一双筷子 (yī shuāng kuàizi) — a pair of chopsticks, 一双手套 (yī shuāng shǒutào) — a pair of gloves.

5. 台 (tái)
Core logic: large electronic or mechanical devices.
For big appliances and machines, use 台: 一台电视 (yī tái diànshì) — a TV, 一台冰箱 (yī tái bīngxiāng) — a fridge, 一台电脑 (yī tái diànnǎo) — a desktop computer. Note: phones and small electronics usually use 部 or just 个,not 台.

A quick tip: if you forget the right measure word, 个 is almost always understood. Native speakers will know exactly what you mean.
