5 Chinese Summer Idioms

成语 (chéngyǔ) — Chinese four-character idioms — are packed with cultural history and vivid imagery. While there are thousands of them, you don’t need to memorize hundreds to sound impressive. There is a small set of summer-themed chengyu that native speakers still use regularly in both speech and writing, perfect for talking about the heat, green scenery and the atmosphere of summer. Here are five of the most useful ones.

1. 烈日炎炎 (liè rì yán yán) — Blazing scorching sun
This is the most common summer idiom in modern Chinese. It describes an extremely hot, bright sunny day at the peak of summer. You will hear it in weather forecasts, see it in news articles, and hear locals use it in daily conversation.
今天外面烈日炎炎，最好中午别出门。(Jīntiān wàimiàn liè rì yán yán, zuì hǎo zhōngwǔ bié chūmén.) “The sun is blazing outside today — better not go out at midday.”

2. 挥汗如雨 (huī hàn rú yǔ) — Sweat falls like rain
This idiom describes sweating profusely from working or exercising in strong heat. It comes from ancient historical texts describing labourers and soldiers working under the summer sun, and it is still widely used today.
建筑工人们在太阳下干活，个个挥汗如雨。(Jiànzhù gōngrénmen zài tàiyáng xià gànhuó, gège huī hàn rú yǔ.) “The construction workers are labouring in the sun, all sweating buckets.”

3. 绿树成荫 (lǜ shù chéng yīn) — Green trees form a canopy of shade
Unlike the others on this list, this idiom is about relief from the heat. It describes a street, park or path lined with thick leafy trees that create cool, continuous shade. It is almost always used as a positive description of a pleasant summer place.
这条小路绿树成荫，夏天散步特别舒服。(Zhè tiáo xiǎolù lǜ shù chéng yīn, xiàtiān sànbù tèbié shūfu.) “This path is shaded by green trees — it’s so pleasant for a summer walk.”

4. 骄阳似火 (jiāo yáng sì huǒ) — The blazing sun is like fire
Similar in meaning to 烈日炎炎，but stronger and more poetic. It emphasizes that the sun feels as hot and intense as fire. It is common in essays, social media posts and news reports during the Major Heat period.
大暑时节骄阳似火，街上的行人很少。(Dàshǔ shíjié jiāo yáng sì huǒ, jiē shàng de xíngrén hěn shǎo.) “During Major Heat the sun burns like fire, and there are few people on the streets.”

5. 鸟语蝉鸣 (niǎo yǔ chán míng) — Bird song and cicada chirps
This idiom captures the unique soundscape of a Chinese summer. It describes the lively, noisy atmosphere of nature in summer: birds singing in the morning and cicadas droning all day long. It has a calm, peaceful feeling.
七月的公园里鸟语蝉鸣，特别有生气。(Qīyuè de gōngyuán lǐ niǎo yǔ chán míng, tèbié yǒu shēngqì.) “In July the park is full of bird song and cicada chirps, so full of life.”
