【Learn Chinese】Chushu: The Day Summer Finally Bows Out |
| By the week of August 24, most of China has already passed through two full weeks of 立秋 (lì qiū / Start of Autumn), but the real end of summer heat arrives only now with 处暑 (chǔ shǔ), the 14th of the 24 solar terms. Its name literally means “exiting the heat”, and it is the quiet official line between the long, heavy summer and the gentle cool of early autumn. Traditional Chinese farming culture divides 处暑 (chǔ shǔ) into three small phases, each marking a subtle shift in nature. First, 鹰乃祭鸟 (yīng nǎi jì niǎo): eagles begin hunting more birds as they prepare for the cooler months. Second, 天地始肃 (tiān dì shǐ sù): heaven and earth begin to quiet down, as plants stop growing fast and leaves slowly prepare to fall. Third, 禾乃登 (hé nǎi dēng): grain crops ripen in the fields, and the harvest season quietly begins across the countryside. For ordinary people, 处暑 (chǔ shǔ) comes with small, pleasant customs. In riverside towns, people still follow the old tradition of 放河灯 (fàng hé dēng), floating paper lanterns down rivers at dusk to honor ancestors and wish for peace. Along the coast, fishing communities celebrate 开渔节 (kāi yú jié), the end of the summer fishing ban, with boat parades and seafood feasts as fishermen head back out to sea. On dinner tables across the country, many families cook duck, following the folk saying that eating duck at 处暑 (chǔ shǔ) keeps the whole family healthy through the season change. The most noticeable change is in the air itself. Daytime can still feel warm, and the last little bursts of 秋老虎 (qiū lǎo hǔ /autumn tiger heat) may still appear, but mornings and evenings turn soft and cool. People start leaving their windows open at night, and walks after dinner feel far more comfortable than they did in July. At the same time, 秋燥 (qiū zào /autumn dryness) begins to set in, so fruits like 梨 (lí /pears) and cooling soups with 银耳 (yín ěr /white fungus) appear more often in home kitchens. 处暑 (chǔ shǔ) is not a loud, festive date. It is a gentle transition, a quiet signal that the busy heat of summer is over, and a slower, softer season is on the way. For anyone learning about Chinese culture, it is a perfect reminder that the 24 solar terms are not just old history — they are still the quiet rhythm of daily life. |
